Pier Report Received

26 February 2025

The report on the up to date condition of Helensburgh Pier has been delivered. The Helensburgh Pier Company Limited have a announced that the long-awaited report is now being considered and meetings are planned with engineering experts.

Bill Purdon, Chairman of the Helensburgh Pier Company said “We have received a detailed report on the condition of the pier. It has shown that to enable the removal of the marine closure notice there is a necessity to carry out remedial structural repairs”. He then added “To fulfil our proposed plans for the pier a figure of around £950,000 may be needed”.

The charity’s plans are for repairs and improvements to the pier; installing a pontoon in the inner harbour area; and for mooring points for yachts to be sited off the east side of the pier. The headline amount is inclusive of these items.

Bill Purdon explained

We want the pier to reopen for the Waverley and other vessels such as cruise tenders, while the pontoon is for use by smaller craft and kayaks. The mooring points are to attract yachts to the town. These measures will promote the area and help boost the local economy

It is understood that no actual costings are as yet available. The sum quoted is an estimate, so further in-depth discussions are necessary.

“Once we have accurate prices we will know the actual costs of our proposals and can then consider a fundraising campaign”, Bill added. “Our plans are designed to allow progress in stages so it will not necessarily mean everything has to be done at once”.

Helensburgh Pier continues to interest and excite people, with almost 900 “Followers” on its Facebook page.

To give members of the public the opportunity to see the outline proposals and chat to the charity trustees, the Helensburgh Pier Company will be taking part in the “Vision for Helensburgh” community event which will be held in The Bridge Halls at Helensburgh Parish Church on Saturday 22nd March between 10am and 4pm.
