Pier Update

19 April 2026

The Helensburgh Pier Company welcomes the news that the negotiations regarding a 25 year lease from Argyll & Bute Council are near to being finalised with the council’s legal team in Lochgilphead.

Bill Purdon, Chair of the charity said, “The lease has been a long time under discussion, so it is good to understand that the terms are agreed and it will be available for signing soon”.

The charity has also met council officials regarding the condition of the pier. The charity understands that the council require a further survey of its condition prior to handing it over and will commission an investigation that will include invasive testing and underwater inspection to fully understand what works will be required to lift the closure notice.

Bill welcomed this development saying, “Our talks with council officers have been very positive and we are grateful the council are undertaking this further study. It will determine exactly what repairs we need to achieve in order to welcome the Waverley back to Helensburgh”.

The charity is also taking a stall at the JLB100 event in Colquhoun Square on Saturday 25th April where members of the Helensburgh Pier Company will be present to talk about their proposals for the pier and answer questions. As Bill says, “Please come along and show your support for our aim to reopen the Pier”.
